Project by Karen Carter from Anaheim Hills, Calif.

Karen admits she's a rebel who never likes to follow rules. She never wanted to follow the traditional route but wanted to create hip scrapbook ideas. Before long she was using distressing techniques, crackle painting, heat embossing and aging found objects to make truly personal memory books for friends and family.

Materials:

6" x 5-1/2" mini album pages
paper trimmer
patterned papers
spray adhesive
scissors
walnut ink
diamond glaze medium
burlap tag
mica
metal bookplate
steel brush
metal-rimmed canvas tags
ribbons, trims
denim
rub-on letters
stamps
vintage photo distressing inks
sanding block
small charm
Glue Dots

Steps:

1. Cut two pieces of striped paper to measure 6-3/4" x 10-1/4". Adhere paper to mini book covers with spray adhesive.

2. Cut a piece of orange paper to measure 6-3/4" x 1-1/2". Adhere to upper portion of front cover.

3. Rough up edges with sanding block and give a light whitewash by dry brushing on some off-white acrylic paint.

4. Cover the small leaf from a stamp set with green paint. Stamp impression once on scrap paper to remove excess paint; then stamp on a metal rimmed canvas tag.

5. Use the black rub-on letters to personalize the canvas tag. Tie ring to spiral binding with ribbon.

6. Print the word "childhood" on a 1" x 2" piece of card stock. Smudge the card stock with ink pad.

7. Apply a layer of glaze over word to achieve a raised glass-like effect. Allow to dry completely.

8. Paint bookplate with dark blue acrylic paint and allow to dry completely. Paint bookplate again with off-white acrylic paint and allow to dry completely. Rub with steel brush to expose colored paint and some metal.

9. Pull a few strings out from all sides of a burlap tag to create a frayed edge. Cut off end with hole in it (save it for use on another project).

10. Spray burlap tag with walnut ink and allow to dry completely. Stitch metal bookplate to burlap tag with embroidery floss.

11. Insert "childhood" label into bookplate window. Adhere burlap and bookplate to cover.

12. Cut a small scrap of green paper to the same size as your photo. Layer mica over photo on top of paper and attach a clip. Adhere to cover.

13. To decorate inside pages of memory book, cut to size pieces of paper that match the color scheme of the book.

14. Adhere paper to interior pages with spray adhesive. Rough up edges with sanding block for an aged look.

15. Insert completed cover page and interior pages into spiral and press spiral shut.

16. Tie scraps of ribbon, denim and burlap fibers to spiral binding.

17. Affix small charm to lower left corner.
