Steps:1. Choose three shades of coordinating card stock. In this case yellow, blue and beige were chosen to represent the theme of "Sun, Sand and Sea" (figure A).
2. Computer or hand journal the word "Sun" at the bottom center of a 4-1/2-inch-square piece of yellow card stock. Computer or hand journal the word "Sea" at the bottom center of a 4-1/2-inch-square piece of blue card stock. Computer or hand journal the word "Sand" at the bottom center of a 4-1/2-inch-square piece of beige card stock. (These three squares will be referred to as phrase squares.)
3. Using a 2-inch jumbo square punch, punch a hole above the word on each phrase square. Tear top edge of "Sea" and "Sand" phrase squares.
4. Cut a piece of foam core to 3" x 12". Align phrase squares over foam core (figure B). Using a pencil, trace punched holes in phrase squares onto foam core to indicate where foam should be cut.
5. Cut foam core 1/4 inch outside of traced lines to ensure that foam does not show from behind phrase squares (figure C). The cuts in the foam do not have to be perfect. The foam will be hidden behind the card stock.
6. Cut three 3-inch squares from page protector. Using wet glue, run a small bead of glue around the perimeter of the holes in foam core. Adhere page protector squares to foam core.
7. Using smaller font, print the word "Sun" repeatedly on a 3-inch square of yellow card stock. Repeat for "Sea" on blue card stock and "Sand" on beige card stock (figure D).
8. Turn phrase border over, exposing back of foam core. Fill each square hole in foam core with corresponding filler--beads, sand or shells as shown in example. Use approximately 1 tablespoon for each square, which will allow the shaking motion. Do not overfill. Be careful to keep all sand and beads off of foam core to ensure that shaker box will seal correctly (figure E).
9. Starting with the "Sun" phrase, adhere to foam core, aligning left edges and centering over holes in foam core. Position "Sea" phrase over foam core overlapping top edge over bottom edge of the adhered "Sun" phrase. Glue "Sea" phrase down. Position "Sand" phrase over foam core overlapping top edge over bottom edge of the "Sea" phrase. Glue "Sand" phrase down.
10. Using sun punch, punch a sun out of artist's metal and adhere to 3-inch card stock "Sun" square using a glue dot (figure F).
11. Run a small bead of glue around edges of holes in foam core and adhere 3-inch card stock "Sun", "Sand" and "Sea" squares in corresponding section, placing words face down to show through front of boxes. Run over each square with a bone folder to ensure good adhesion (figure G).
12. Starting at top right corner, tear right edge off "Sun", "Sand" and "Sea" phrases (figure H).
13. Set border aside.
14. Using 12" x 12" sheet of sand card stock, journal poem or phrase of choice in bottom right corner of page.
15. Layer (from bottom) a yellow 12" x 12" sheet card stock, a blue 12" x 12" sheet card stock and the printed sand 12" x 12" sheet card stock together.
16. Place border next to layered 12" x 12" card stock page, aligning top and bottom edges. Using top torn edge of "Sand" square on border as a guide, tear the printed sand 12" x 12" paper horizontally as shown in example. Repeat tearing on blue 12" x 12" sheet.
17. Adhere blue torn card stock to yellow 12" x 12" card stock and sand torn card stock to blue card stock as shown in example (figure I).
18. Cut three 30-inch lengths of hemp cord. Tie several knots in cord. Tie cord around page, positioning cord over poem or phrase (figure J). String several beads on ends of cord and knot in place. Trim ends if needed.
19. Position shaker box border 1/2 inch from left edge of layered 12" x 12" page and adhere (figure K).
20. Use medium brown chalk to distress edges and add depth to journaling.
