Perhaps a little practice with dental tools gave Priscilla Hauser the steady hand to work with a paint brush. Joining host Carol Duvall in studio, Hauser, owner of
Priscilla's, shares how painting became more than just a hobby for her.
After attending dental hygiene school, Hauser's interest in art prevailed as her passion. "Mother and dad wouldn't pay for art school, so that's how I wound up in dental hygiene," she admits. An avid painter, Hauser's interest in art began when she was a child. "Even when I was five, one of my favorite places was mother leaving me in front of a cosmetic counter, where a beautiful lady mixed all the colored powders," she says. "It was color, color--colored wax sticks, watercolor. . . I loved color. I wanted to paint."
With "yes you can" as her self-motto, Hauser decided to learn how to paint. While many painters learn to paint on canvases, Hauser's first painting was on a salt shaker. After she and her husband Jerry bought their first home, Hauser painted household items to decorate the home. Soon, her neighbors saw her work and convinced Hauser to teach a class. It was then that she began to teach painting classes around a Ping-Pong table in her garage.
Soon, Hauser had so many students in her classes, her neighbors began calling the zoning commission to report the parked cars overflowing from Hauser's driveway into the neighborhood streets. The commission gave her 30 days to find a shop in which to teach her classes. With the help of her students, Priscilla found a new facility and opened "Priscilla's Little Red Tole House." She soon began making money.
Though she faced some trials in the early stages of her business, Hauser's painting classes became quite successful. "You know, there are always obstacles, and it takes confidence, and I just think we all need so much confidence and not to be afraid," she says. "One of the most wonderful gifts was my mother saying 'you can do it,' and when I say 'yes you can,' you see, in my heart, I know you can, and everyone can."
