Business Is Booming

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-161 -- More Projects »
Moving from hands-on to storytelling, Mary O'Neil discusses the origins of her company. She says that it began "as a stain on a shirt," that is, she needed to cover a blemish on a blouse. To do so, Mary created a design out of a potato and used it on the discolored garment as she would a rubber stamp.

Having noticed Mary's newly "spotted" blouse, many of her friends began asking for shirts stamped with similar yet original designs. With some encouragement from her boss, Mary decided to start her own business and began selling her shirts. After several attempts, one manufacturer convinced Mary to invest in her own rubber stamp company, and such was the birthright of Hot Potatoes.

Although Mary admitted to being apprehensive (actually, downright worried) about investing so much capital at once, the company has done very well and all of this entrepreneur's hard work has brought a terrific fabric stamp company from idea to reality.
