Artist and sculptor Tommie Lane joins host Alex Anderson to share designer thimbles. While metal thimbles have been used for more than 1,000 years, Lane's intricate creations are valuable and eye-catching gifts for today's passionate quilter.

Lane makes a variety of shapes and sizes of thimbles, including models to fit children as young as three years of age (figure A). She designs thimbles for people with long fingernails, tailors' thimbles for those who quilt or sew using the side of their finger, and even a sewing ring that is both attractive and practical (figures B, C and D).

Lane uses many precious metals and stones in the nearly 200 different styles to her credit. And while gold, silver, pearls and rubies give this special jewelry gleam and glamour, each thimble is carefully crafted to wear comfortably and is excellent for quilting (figure E).
