Figure C
Quilting experts Alex Anderson and Majorie Horton offer this advice when shopping for quilting frames and hoops.

Floor Model Quilting Frames (figure A)

  • Select a model with really good tension control.
  • Make sure the frame is stable and sturdy.
  • Choose a model that's easy to set up and take down.

Quilting Hoops

  • PVC pipe hoops work well for borders and it travels well as it separates for easy packing (figure B).
  • Free standing spindle hoop frame (figure C) permits hands-free quilting.
  • Tabletop hoop frames—test a variety of hoops for suitability to your quilting specifications.

Another good piece of advice—examine frames and hoops in person before purchasing. If you have a quilting friend or guild, check to see what they recommend, or test their frames/hoops out and shop around to see what fits your quilting needs. A little homework goes a long way in being happy with your selection.
