Old Italian Block
PHOTO

These are the patches that go into the Italian block. Cut 1-7/8 inch perpendicular and parallel lines (a little less than 2-inch cut on either side of the ruler) and you don't have to worry about the triangles.
Parallel and perpendicular channels

1. Cut parallel and perpendicular channels 1-7/8 inch wide through the center of 8-inch fabric squares placed on point (figure H). This creates patches for the Old Italian Block.

2. Cut parallel and perpendicular channels 3-1/2 inches wide through the center of 7-1/2 inch fabric squares positioned on the horizontal. This creates patches for A Plain Block.

Four cuts yield nine ready-to-sew patches. When layering and cutting more than one fabric you will have a greater quantity of nine-patch blocks.

The four corner squares are cut into 2-inch patches for this updated plain block. The block is made up of four corner squares, the center square and four rectangle blocks.
