Gai Perry, author of "Color from the Heart" helps with teaching color theory.
A fun way to design a quilt is to cut three, 2" squares from 40 pieces of different fabrics (figure A). Place squares into paper bag, shake the bag, then pull the squares out of the bag one at a time and place onto grid (figure B), 10 squares across and 12 down. What develops is a potpourri of colors without over thinking the combination. Analyze once finished and make changes that helps you feel good about the design.

Look for inspiration from elements that surround you; fabrics, photographs, or objects around the house. Choose fabrics that have the feel of the object chosen and cut into 2" strips (figure C). As for color placement, take into consideration the relationship of the warm and cool colors (figure D) which will allow for a more striking effect. Perry begins by laying out a quarter of the design by simply laying down the squares (figure E). Once they are laid out, Perry assesses the relationship and makes any necessary changes.
The next aspect Perry talks about is visualization. Focus on a person, place or thing that you feel strongly about. Sort through your fabrics and select those that you feel represent the essence of the subject. Perry cuts her fabric into triangles and starts her layout from the top, telling a story as she goes down the design (figure F). These are good techniques to learn that you can take to larger quilts.
