In the simplest terms "birthing" a quilt refers to a quilt that is "bound" pillowcase style.

  • Layer the quilt top and backing, right sides together, with a layer of batting on top (figure A).

  • Sew a 3/4-inch seam allowance all the way around the quilt (figure B) leaving enough of an opening to fit your hand in and invert the whole sandwich (quilt top, backing and batting) right side out (figure C).

  • Hand stitch the opening closed.
