Quilting gloves help quilters hold cloth steady when stippling. The palm side of the glove is littered with small rubber "bumps" that work to get a firm hold on the fabric. If you don't have access to quilting gloves, try latex gloves or clean gardening gloves.

darning foot
Guest Cindy Walter shares these tips for free-motion quilting technique known as stippling. Incorporate this idea into quilting projects or into garment cuffs and collars.
  • Use a top stitch needle. This needle has a fat shaft, very sharp point and a large eye that's perfect for using decorative types of thread. If you can't find a top stitch needle, try using a 90/14 jeans needle.
  • Equip your machine with a darning presser foot (free-motion foot). Use machine quilting thread on top and in bobbin. Be careful not to use hand quilting thread because it has a coating on it that could gunk up the machine.
  • Make a sandwich of quilt top, cotton batting and bottom lining. Drop the feed dogs on the machine and center fabric sandwich underneath the presser foot.
  • Position a hand on either side of the needle. Run the machine fast but move the fabric around slowly in a meandering motion without crossing lines. To avoid puckering, be certain to start in the center of the fabric then rotate out and around without skipping areas.
