Note: Traditions With a Twist is imperative for making this quilt. Here are some basic guidelines provided in the show.
- Cut fabric swatches from each of the eight fabrics. Label fabrics 1-8 ranging from light to dark. Light is #1 and the darkest fabric is #8. Arrange swatches in a diagram (figure A). Numbering the fabrics provides consistent sets in the quilt.
Tip: For difficulty determining a color scheme for light to dark fabric combinations, Blanche recommends photocopying the fabric diagram in black and white to visualize the palette.
- Cut 11, 3-inch strips from each 1-1/4 yard of fabric.
Tip: If the fabric is not 42 inches wide cut a few extra strips.
- The quilt has 16 strip set combinations (figure B).
- For example section B (figure C) consists of:
2 strips of #7 labeled fabric
2 strips of #6 labeled fabric
2 strips of #5 labeled fabric
2 strips of #4 labeled fabric - Sew one of each of the strips to create a strip set. Create two sets and label it with the letter B (figure D) on top of each strip set.
- Chain the two strip sets together to create a unit (figure E). Press toward even number (2, 4, 6, 8) for each section.
- The quilts consists of 9 units; 4 units for the top of the quilt, 4 units for the bottom of the quilt and a center unit.
Cutting technique:
- After sewing strips together, cut (3 or 6) multiple sets (figure F) by placing fabric right side down, into 3-inch strips, however, stagger each unit 1/2-inch to compensate for the seam allowances and to make for easier cutting.
- Follow book instructions for each formula: A, B, C, D, E and F.
- Arrange the quilt design on a large area such as the floor and chain-stitch four units together at a time for the top and bottom of the Sunshine and Shadow quilt.
