Materials:

light box
spray sizing or spray starch
blue removable marker
iron
towel
ruler

Steps:

1. Make a flower pattern (figure A).

2. Make a six-inch template with dots in corner and edges.

3. Spray background fabric with starch or sizing and press with an iron to firm the fabric.

4. Use a ruler and a soluable marker to make a one inch mark along the edge of quilt to the baseline.

5. Use a template and soluable marker or thread to make reference dots (figure B). Don't press over the marker lines as the heat from the iron could cause the ink to set.

6. Use light box to mark applique on the background fabric. Applique (figure C).

7. After appliqueing, remove mark lines with damp cloth or light spray of water. Let fabric air dry.

8. Press the piece using steam and a cotton or high setting. Press with a towel underneath--not on a hard surface. Press from the back (figure D).

9. Trim, leaving seam allowance (figure E).

10. Go back to the light box and mark areas with quilting designs.

11. Baste grid horizontally and vertically until it resembles a graph grid. Take time to baste the layers well. This will ensure a smooth quilt (figure F).
