Materials:

Fabric:
1/4-yard red fabrics for checkerboard
1/4-yard black fabrics for background
1/4-yard white fabrics for checkerboard
1/2-yard yellow fabrics for petals
1/4-yard light green fabrics for leaf half
1/4-yard medium greens for leaf half
1/8-yard dark greens for leaf veins
1/2-yard dark browns for flower center
1/4-yard medium browns for flower center

Steps:

Creating Mosaic-Fabric
1. Separate fabrics into color families (figure A).

2. From one color family, cut the fabrics into small pieces, pin them (figure B) and sew together randomly to create on single piece of fabric sewn from many small pieces. Repeat this process for each color family of fabrics.

Applique
1. Use what ever method of applique you prefer. I do everything by hand. You can, however, use machine piecing and applique or even iron-on applique!

2. On a 18 x 24 piece of paper, draft a pattern* (figure C). Use the pattern to create templates by tracing down each individual shape onto freezer paper (shiny side up). Number each shape on both the master pattern and the template (paper side) for easy identification on complex designs (figure D).

*Editor's note - Guest Shannon William's pattern consists of a pieced, alternating-color block border and a large, applique sunflower and leaf design (click on the second photo above for a larger image). The sides of the border have eight light blocks set alternately between nine dark blocks. The top and bottom borders consist of five dark blocks set between six light blocks. The applique sunflower covers the top two-thirds of the quilt and features a center drawn with five cocentric circles forming ring shapes. The center is surrounded by 20 various shapes and sizes of petals. The bottom one-third left corner of the quilt is covered by two, cropped, extra-large sunflower leaves marked with stylized, wing-shaped veins that are the same color as the background.

3. Place the freezer paper template on the back of the mosaic fabric created earlier (figure E). Press in place with an iron on medium setting. Cut out each template adding a 1/4-inch seam allowance on all edges.

4. Working with the right side of the shape, finger press the seam allowance under and tack the edges down to keep in place. Pay close attention to keep curved edges as smooth as possible (figure F).

5. Arrange and layer all pieces in place. Work out how the layers will fit together by tucking back layers under front pieces (figure G).

6. Applique the outer edges of each piece using small slip stitches and thread to match the fabric (figure H).

7. Remove taking stitches and lightly press.

8. To complete the quilt top, remove the freezer paper from the backs of all fabrics by gently pulling (figure I).

9. Embellish the quilt top as desired with any embroidery, buttons, seed beads, etc.

10. Layer the backing fabric wrong side up, batting and quilt top right side up. Baste layers together. Quilt as desired (figure J).

11. Cut binding fabric in 2-1/4-inch width bias strips and sew end to end. Press binding strip in half lengthwise and sew the raw edge to the front of quilt edge. Turn to back and hand stitch in place covering seam.

Finished size is 18" x 24"
