Figure A

1. When choosing a pattern, select one with a minimum of seams. Look for a pattern so you can overlap side seams. Lay it out on muslin first, offset the pattern about 1/2" on the back seam then add in an extra inch of seam allowance all the way around (figure A). Cut lining fabric the same as the foundation.

2. When choosing fabrics for a collage, get a variety of fabrics in size of motifs and patterns. Look for home décor fabrics with variety in color and value (figure B).

Figure C

3. Once you have fabric and pattern, cut out your motif, adding about 1/8" margin beyond the edge of the motif (figure C). Short-bladed scissors work great for this.

4. Lay out the large motifs, creating some focal points for the vest (figure D).

5. Continue layering fabric on the piece, pinning each layer in place (figure E). Secure the pin in the layers to prepare for taking the work to the sewing machine.

6. Set up sewing machine for free-motion stitching. Change out foot to one made for darning or appliqué. Sew pin to pin, pulling the pins out as you go.. Stitch along the edge to every motif.

7. Launder the vest with a load of towels.

8. Finish edges with trim design elements.
