Scrapbook quilts are a fun way to use your family photograph, old or new. Make a quilt with them! Your scrapbook quilt will make a perfect gift, a treasured family heirloom, or just a warm reminder of good times.

Materials:

Creating Scrapbook Quilts by Ami Simms
photographs - colored or black and white
plain white paper
Springmaid Southern Belle 200 thread count white cotton fabric
Photos -To-Fabric transfer paper
Scotch double-sided removable tape
home iron
coordinating fabric for patchwork strips
rotary cutter, ruler, and mat

Steps:

1. Select photographs to transfer and trim away boring backgrounds if desired. Although pictures up to 8-1/2" x 11" can be transferred successfully, beginners may want to use pictures smaller than the sole plate of their iron (figure A).

2. Place the photographs on plain paper with removable double-sided tape. Take your pictures and your transfer paper to an establishment with a color copy machine (try OfficeMax, Office Depot, Mailboxes Etc.) and have them follow the package directions .

3. Once the images are copied to the transfer paper, cut each image out. Place one face down on the white fabric and press down very hard for 30 seconds on cotton setting (figure B). Lift the iron and peel off the backing paper. It's that easy!

4. Trim seam allowances of the completed photo-transfers to a scant quarter inch and cut fabric strips 1-1/2 inches wide with which to sash them together (figure C). Remember since every quilt is unique there is no "pattern." However, this technique will allow you to puzzle your pictures together to make a one-of-a-kind family heirloom no matter how many pictures you have or what size or shape they are. Experiment! Have fun!
