Before You Start:

Cut the following templates out of medium-weight sandpaper (figure A). Tie fabrics tend to be slippery and the sandpaper will help hold the fabric down when cutting.

  • one 4" square
  • one 1-1/2" square for the knot or center of the bow tie
  • one 2-1/2" square for the tie and background fabric (you'll also need to measure down 7/8" on two sides of the square to create an angle)

Fabric Cut From Templates:

one 4" square of muslin (base)
one 1-1/2" square of tie fabric (center knot)
two 2-1/2" squares of tie fabric (bow tie)
two 2-1/2" squares of background fabric

Steps:

  1. Start by turning the tie over to reveal its seam and cut it out with scissors (figure B).
  2. Take out the interfacing from the tie and put aside (figure C). Next, snip the tie point off. These scraps can be used to make pillows, a vest, or borders for you quilt (figure D).
  3. Hand wash the tie fabric with a mild detergent and let dry.
  4. Fold four-inch muslin in quarters and crease with an iron. Open and pin the knot piece in the center so all four corners are aligned with the creases (figure E ).
  5. Stitch a 1/8-inch seam allowance all the way around the knot to secure it in place (figure F).
  6. Pin the right side of one bow tie (the angle side) to any of the knot edges and sew in place with a 1/4-inch seam allowance (figure G). Flip fabric over and finger press (figure H). Repeat on the opposite side of the knot with another piece of bow tie fabric.
  7. Now it's time to attach the background pieces. For these, trim 1/4-inch off the two edges where the angle meets. Then press the edges under to finish the raw edges (figure I).
  8. Next attach the fabric the same way as you did the bow ties (figure J).
  9. Applique around the bow tie to finish the block off (figure K).
