PHOTO

Restore America Quilt
Inspired by HGTV's Restore America: A Salute to Preservation campaign, this quilt represents 12 sites across the United States in need of restoration. Here are the assembly and finishing instructions for the quilt.
Materials:

Restore America printed quilt pattern - Discontinued
lightweight interfacing for scallops
fabrics:
- sashing and binding - 1/2 yard - deep red (5)
- piping - 1/4 yard yellow-orange (4)
- border - 2 yards purple (6)
- border scallops - 2 yards total of midnight blue (1), deep purple (2), assorted blues (9, 13, 19, 20, 23)

Cutting:

Note: Number and letter notations are from the printed pattern. Unfortunately the pattern has been discontinued.
  • From deep red (5), cut eight 1-1/2" -wide lengthwise strips. Cut strips into three 1-1/2" x 12-1/2" sashing strips; 12, 1-1/2" x 13" sashing strips (see step 1 before cutting), and four 1-1/2" x 53-1/2" vertical sashing strips. Cut six 2-/4"-wide lengthwise strips. Piece strips to make 300" of binding.

  • From yellow-range (4), cut five 1"-wide strips. Trim and piece to make two 1" x 40" strips for horizontal piping and two 1" x 53" strips for vertical piping. Cut four I circles from Block 7.

  • From purple (6), cut six 9-/2"-wide strips. Piece to make two 9-/2" x 40-1/2" top and bottom borders and two 9-1/2" x 71-1/2" side borders.

  • From assorted blues, cut 168, 1-1/2" x 7" strips; 40, 1-1/2" x 10" strips.

  • From interfacing, cut 14 scallops and 4 corners. Transfer centerline to interfacing pieces.

Before cutting the sashing fabric, space out and embroider the block names on the fabric in similarly colored thread to create subtle name plates for each block.
Steps:

1. On each 1-1/2" x 13" deep red strip, center and embroider the name of each block. We found it easier to embroider the names then cut the strips. The names are:
First Hermitage
Edison & Ford Winter Estates
Drayton Hall
Leo Carrillo Ranch
Paul Robeson House
Dunn Gardens
Sewall-Belmont House
Molly Brown House
1859 Ashton Villa
Pabst Mansion
Val-Kill
Hakone Gardens

2. Trim each strip after embroidery to 12-1/2" long, centering script. Stitch each strip to the bottom of matching block. Lay out blocks in order as shown. Join blocks into vertical rows; add a sashing strip to the top of each row. Join rows with vertical sashing strips to complete center.

3. Fold piping frame strips in half lengthwise, right side out. Baste in place on quilt edges, raw edges matching. Ends should be even with stitching line - do not catch ends in border seams.

4. Add top and bottom borders to quilt. Add side borders to quilt. Fold piping to border side of seam, fold raw ends under to make angle, and appliqué to border. Add circles in corners as shown in photo.
