Restore America Quilt: Block 12 Hakone Gardens
Inspired by HGTV's Restore America: A Salute to Preservation campaign, this quilt represents 12 sites across the United States in need of restoration. This block represents Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, Calif.,the oldest Japanese residential garden in the western hemisphere.
Designer Tom Russell examined elements from Hakone Gardens to fashion this contemporary block. Watch the video to learn more about the elements that gave life to this design.
Materials:Restore America printed quilt pattern - Discontinued fusible webbing thread for satin stitching - green, chartreuse, blue, yellow, pink, purple fabrics: - background 13" square midnight blue (1) - lily pad & leaves - 5" x 8" dark green (21) - bamboo - 6" x 12" light green (22) - water lily yellow - 5" square yellow-orange (4) - water lily - 1 fat eighth each light pink (16) and pink (14) Cutting: Note: Number and letter notations are from the printed pattern. Unfortunately the pattern has been discontinued.- From midnight blue (1), cut 13" square.
- From dark green (21), cut A, H, I, J.
- From light green (22), cut 1 each: B, C, D, E, F, G, K, L, M, N, O, P.
- From pink (14), cut Q, T .
- From yellow-orange (4), cut R.
- From light pink (16), cut S, three U, V and V reversed.
Steps:1. Fuse fabric and webbing for all templates except Q. Trace and cut out all block pieces.
2. Position lily pad A as shown and lightly fuse. Repeat with bamboo stems B-G and bamboo leaves H-P. When satisfied with placement, complete appliqué by fusing.3. Position pink arc Q and appliqué in place. Trim away excess fabric from behind arc.
4. Position yellow arc R and fuse.
5. Position outer petal strip S and appliqué. Repeat with inner petals T, middle petals U, and side petals V.6. After assembly is complete, machine satin stitch all edges in colors as shown. Satin stitch on lines as shown to make leaf stems and tips. 7. Trim block to 12-1/2" square.
