Inspired by HGTV's Restore America: A Salute to Preservation campaign, this quilt represents 12 sites across the United States in need of restoration. This block represents 1859 Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas—a classic example of Galveston's great Broadway mansions.

Materials:

Restore America printed quilt pattern - Discontinued
fusible webbing
thread for satin stitching – green, blue, yellow
pearle cotton for stem stitch – orange
fabrics:
- pieced block - 8" x 15" each midnight blue (1) and deep pink (14), 1 fat eighth each deep purple (2) and light turquoise (18), scrap orange-red (16), 4" x 13" orange-brown (11)
- appliqué - 7" square orange-yellow (4), 11" square light green (22)

Cutting:

    Note: Number and letter notations are from the printed pattern. Unfortunately the pattern has been discontinued.

  • From midnight blue (1), cut eight 3" x 3-1/2" strips (Center 1, 3, 5, 7).

  • From deep pink (14), cut six 1" x 3" strips.

  • (Center 2, 4, 6), four 1-1/2" x 12" strips (Center 8, 9, C).

  • From deep purple (2), cut 22, 1-1/2" x 3" strips (Side 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21).

  • From light turquoise (18) cut 22, 1" x 3" strips (Side 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22), two 1" x 12" strips (Side 23, 24).

  • From orange-red (16), cut 1-1/4" x 8" rectangle E.

  • From orange-brown (11), cut 1-1/4" x 1-3/4" D, 1-1/4" x 2-3/4" F,
    1-1/2" x 12-1/2" G.

  • From orange-yellow (4), cut H and J.

  • From light green (22), cut I.

Steps:

1. Side Section - Using paper foundation piecing patterns, position pieces for areas 1 and 2. Stitch, trim, and finger press open. Repeat for Side Section areas 3-24. Repeat to make two Side Sections.

2. Center Section - For Center Section A, position pieces for areas 1 and 2. Stitch, trim and finger press open. Repeat for areas 3 - 9. Repeat to make Center Section B.

3. Join Center Section as shown. Remove paper and press. Add C to complete Center Section.

4. Lay out Center Section with two Side Sections as shown; join. Join D, E, and F; add to bottom, aligning with right end. Add G to right side. Trim left edge as shown to complete 12-1/2" pieced block.

5. Position and fuse H and I. Position and fuse J.

6. Machine satin stitch along edges in green, blue, and yellow.

7. Stem stitch step (E) in orange.
