Isabella's Garden: April 2003 Quilt Block
Friendship Star Row
Welcome back to the fourth month of Isabella's Garden! Sometimes a row and sometimes a bordered block, this 12-month project is tackling one section at a time. This month, we're making a Friendship Star block row.
Make one row of four Friendship Star blocks, separating each block with a side border. Employ your favorite method to make these or follow the instructions below.Materials:
fabrics - background, star center, star points, side borders
sewing machine and thread
rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
Steps:
- Cut (figure A):
(16) 2-1/2" squares (unit A) - middle background
(8) 2-7/8" squares (unit B) - middle background
(4) 2-1/2" squares (unit C) - star centers
(8) 2-7/8" squares (unit D) - star points
(4) 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" strips (unit E) - side borders
Stack a unit B and D square right sides together then mark a centered, diagonal cutting line. Mark a stitch line 1/4" from either side of the cut line (figure B). Stitch, cut and press toward the darker fabric, rendering two BD-units measuring 2-1/2" square. Repeat to make 16 of these.
Lay out the units as shown (figure C) and join pieces (horizontally then vertically) to create a Friendship Star block, pressing all seams in the same direction as you work.
Create the row by stitching the pieces together in this order: Star block, unit E (figure D), star block, unit E, star block, unit E, star block, unit E.
