Fused Sandwich

9. Cut your first template from the freezer paper with a craft knife (figure E). Don't worry about not cutting perfectly. The background adds a design element when it peeks through.

10. Choose a value of fabric that matches the value letter on your pattern.

11. Using the negative space on the freezer paper (the empty space where the template had been) "audition" fabric by moving the freezer paper sheet over the surface until satisfied with selection (figure F).

12. Replace the template into that perfect spot on the (sky) fabric and pin it in place (figure G).

13. Rough cut the fabric about 1/4 inch away from the template (figure H).

14. Cut a piece of my 'Misty-White®' or 'Misty-Black®". Fuse about the same size as the fabric (figure I).

15. Now you have an "uncut sandwich", which is:

  • (a) the fuse on the bottom
  • (b) the fabric face up in the middle
  • (c) the freezer paper on top, shiny side down

16. Fold a piece of parchment paper and slip this 'fused sandwich' inside to protect the iron and board. With an iron on the cotton setting, lightly, but completely, fuse the sandwich together (figure J) Tip: Guest recommends a dry iron without steam. Tip: Remove any excess fuse from the parchment with a kitchen scrubbie so that it doesn't re-melt onto the quilt top later

17. Slide the lightly fused sandwich onto a cutting matt, use a rotary cutter to trim the sandwich to the edge of the freezer paper. No seam allowance necessary. This is the "cut sandwich"(figure K).

18. Peel off the template and replace and tape-tack it in place on the freezer paper sheet. Cut each template and complete one sandwich at a time. Pace the sandwich into the correlating numbered spot on the background (figure L). Replace the freezer paper template onto the freezer paper master with tape so that you can audition the next piece when it is cut out. This is also helpful when locating a template later if you chose to change a fabric selection.

19. Repeat this sandwich technique with each template until done.

20. Secure the pieces with flower head pins. When pleased with the results, with parchment as a buffer tack down the whole piece with the iron (pins included). Then remove pins and re-iron firmly (figure M).
