Quilt Design

1. For the areas that will be pieced, cut the correct size pieces out of all the fabrics you have chosen.

2. Cut several pieces from each fabric for an ample selection. More can be cut later after determining which fabrics are perfect for your project.

3. Place the pieces on the design wall neatly and slightly overlapping (figure A). Do not leave gaps or the color of the design wall will creep into the color balance. Place the fabrics up quickly. Do not think about each selection. Just slap them up instinctively. Then using the reducing glass, look at the work and begin to move pieces around and eliminate fabrics that don't work. Do this over and over until the composition is pleasing.

Appliqué

1. Measure out the finished size of the block on graph paper.

2. Make a sketch as to where each piece will fit. This does not have to be perfect. Roughly cut out pieces of fabric for each piece and for the background and borders* (figure B).
*This fabric will not be used in the quilt. It will be used as a color study. It will keep you from spending hour's hand-appliquéing only to find that the colors and proportions don't perform well together.

3. Glue up a mocked-up block on the paper (figure C). Pin it in place on the design wall (figure D).

4. Evaluate the project and remove unwanted pieces and replace with desirable pieces.
