Steps:
Read all instructions and pre-wash and press all fabrics before cutting out pieces. The block shown was done using the fusing method. You can use other applique methods if you desire.

Fusing Method
1. Please read all instructions on fusible web before starting.

2. Trace pattern piece number 1 (the head) on the paper side of the fusible web using a pencil. Flip the printed pattern over and trace the other half of the head connecting to the first half making a complete pattern piece. Use a light source (figure A) such as a window or light box to see through the back side of the pattern. Continue this step until all pattern pieces one through seven are traced as full outlines.

3. Cut around each pattern piece allowing 1/4 inch. Do not cut on the traced line.

4. Place the fusible web piece on the back of the fabric (figure B) chosen. Press according to manufacturer's instructions. Let cool, then cut out on the traced line.

5. Peel paper backing from each shape.

6. Cut 9-1/2-inch background square using cutting board and ruler. Do not use pattern, as copying may have altered the accuracy of the block size.

7. Place pattern pieces on background (figure C). Use photo of block and pattern for correct placement. Layer in order given: 1 being the first down, 2 being the second down, 3 the third and so on. Do not press until all pieces are tucked in the proper place. An applique pressing sheet works great on this step.

8. Follow manufacturer's instructions for final fusing. Press.

Finishing
1. Use a water-soluble marker to draw on "Baxter's" smile using the pattern as a guide (figure D). Do not iron the block until stitched and water-spritzed or the marker will be permanent. The smile can be embroidered by machine or by hand.

2. Buttonhole stitch around pattern using the photo of the block as your guide. The block shown was done by machine using Mettler embroidery thread but can easily be done by hand—just use two strands of DMC black embroidery floss for hand work.

3. Do minimal quilting in the background to prevent applique pieces from lifting. Block can be used as a wall-hanging, pillow, tote-bag or as a substitute for one of the 12 blocks in the Amy Bradley Designs "Dazzling Dogs" quilt.
