Winter Chill Mantel Quilt

Materials:

1 yard various blue fabrics for snowman blocks, setting rectangles, triangles and icicle strips
1/2 yard white print fabric for snowman blocks and icicle strips
1/3 yard small red check or plaid for setting triangles
1/8 yard scraps of black for Snowman blocks
orange carrot button for snowman nose
black embroidery floss for snowman’s features

Steps:

1. Measure mantel. Measure length and depth then add 1/2 inch to both length and depth for extra seam allowance.

2. To determine the number of blocks, divide the length of the mantel in inches and round down to next whole number to get the number of blocks to make.

3. To paper-piece snowman block, draw pattern (figure A) then make one copy per block. Copy from the original pattern for best results.

4. Put the snowman block together, assembling in paper-piece order (figure B).

5. Make as many snowman blocks as needed. Assemble snowman row by sewing two rows of red check or plaid setting triangles to opposite sides of a snowman block. Press toward triangle.

6. Sew two more small checks to remaining sides (figure C). Press toward triangle again.

7. Trim block 1/4 inch from corner on all sides, squaring as you go (figure D).

8. Assemble icicle row by stitching strips together along the short edge to form the row (figure E).

9. Measure the length of snowman row, then trim the icicle row to same length.

10. Assemble quilt by placing the icicle row wrong side up and upside down on top of snowman row. Pin and sew rows together. Pin top of mantle fabric wrong side up on top of icicle row and sew rows together.

11. Layer batting, backing and quilt top and quilt as desired. Finish the block with carrot button nose (figure F) and embroidered French knot eyes.

To make a wall quilt instead of a mantel quilt, add trees blocks. To make trees that suggests snow falling on evergreens, use the paper-piece method and, green and white fabric (figure H).
