Quilt maker Cyndy Rymer and son Zack discuss how they worked together to design a basketball quilt called Midnight Hoop Dreams.

Finished Quilt Size: 67" x 90"

Note: This quilt was designed for a double-bed size platform bed, so the side borders would fit within the frame. Add a 2-inch inner border to fit a standard 54-inch mattress, or make the outside border wider.

Materials:

9 to 12 fat quarters of bright oranges to darker rusts for the basketballs*
2-1/4 yards tan flooring fabric
1 yard blue for key
1/2 yard red for key
2-1/4 yards blue for borders
3 four-yard packages of black single-fold bias tape or 3/4 yard black fabric to make your own
1 yard iron-on interfacing
1/2-yard iron-on stabilizer
1/4" Steam-A-Seam tape
white rayon thread for basketball hoop

*Select a range of values for the basketballs from bright orange to deep rust fabrics. The leftover darker rusts came in handy for the binding (figure A). Any tan would work for the background, however, Cyndy found the plank flooring fabric (figure B) for the key (center of the court). Customize the key for your quilt by making it in the colors of your guy's favorite basketball team.

Steps:

Cutting Instructions

Flooring Fabric:
- Cut two 6-1/2" x 35-1/2" strips.
- Cut one 32-1/2" x 39-1/2" rectangle.
- Cut four 3-1/2" strips, then piece end-to-end and cut two 74-1/2" pieces.

Blue for Key:
- Cut one 32-1/2" x 36" rectangle.

Red for half-circle in Key:

- Make a half-circle paper template by folding a 32" x 16-1/4" piece of paper in half.
- Form the half-circle arc using a yardstick and pencil.
- Starting on the fold with the 16-1/4 inch mark at the center corner, slowly move the yardstick in an arc, making large dots at 3-inch intervals.
- Connect the dots to form the arc, and cut the paper template out.
- Fold the red fabric in half, and place the fold line of the paper template on the fold of the fabric and pin in place.
- Cut out the half-circle.

Key Interfacing (optional):
- Fold the interfacing in half, and then cut a half-circle from the interfacing that is about 1/4 inch smaller than the fabric half.

Black Bias Binding Tape:
- To make the bias binding tape, piece together enough 1-1/8 inch bias strips to make approximately 11 yards of bias binding. Or use 1/2-inch-wide single-fold black bias binding tape.
