Host Alex Anderson welcomes quilter Kate Tegtmeier, who has taken her love of miniature foundation piecing to a new level with small quilt pins. Kate demonstrates how to make two-inch pineapple block quilt pins.

Materials:

hand-dyed fabrics
size 60 needle
glue stick
scissors
pattern*
sewing machine with open sewing foot
spray starch
iron
*Pattern is discontinued, check online sources for miniature quilt patterns.

Steps:

1. Work from the center of the block pattern outward. Cut a small piece of fabric for the center, and adhere it to the paper pattern with the glue stick.

2. Lay a second fabric on the first center piece right sides together and use the sewing machine to stitch along the pattern sewing lines. Note: Use an open sewing foot, and set your stitch length to .5. Take three or four stitches before and after the pattern line.

3. Trim the excess fabric very close. Finger crease the fabric open. Spray the fabric with starch and press with an iron.

4. Work on the diagonal, alternating from opposite sides to prevent distortion. Affix the miniature quilt blocks to jewelry pin backings for unique, wearable art.
