Quilted silhouette portraits

Materials:

Sakura Pigma Micron .01 pen in black
Sakura Specialist Craypas oil pastels (these are top artist quality for maximum pigment)
Richard Hemmings #10 milliners needles
Sulky polyester sewing thread or Mettler's Metrosene
Good Cut-to-the-Point  five-inch embroidery scissors for cutting stencils and the ultrasuede
ultrasuede
Avery uncut label paper for photocopying silhouettes to create a self-sticking template. Ask at your photocopy shop or office supply aisle or store. These are available by the package as "uncut 8-1/2 x 11" label sheets."

Steps:

Silhoutte and pattern making

1. Take a silhouette photo with an instant camera (figure A).

2. Make a photocopy of the silouhette and trace a drawing off of it (figures B and C).

3. Translate photo into an artistic pattern (figure D).

4. Cut the pattern (figure E).

5. Prepare the block.

6. Adhere the pattern by using freezer paper or self-stick uncut label paper ( figure F).

Appliquing silhouette
1. Mark the silhouette onto quilt block with permanent pen (figure G).

2. Cut the silhouette out of ultrasuede fabric. Ultrasuede has no seam, but has good visual appeal in texture, color etc.

3. Use a glue stick to baste the ultrasuede silhouette cutout to the block (figure H).

4. Hand applique the silhoutte to the block.

7. Embellish details with ink (figure I).

Stencil-shaded silhouette technique
1. Use the same adhesive-back paper pattern (both uncut and already cut) (figure J).

2. Place it on the blank cloth as a stencil (figure K).

3. Draw around the inside of the stencil to draw the portrait outline onto the block (figure L).

4. Use oil pastels to shade stencil.
