Here's a bias rectangle connector block from GoGo and the Veil of Rashaida. This type of star is shown with a diagram in
Voices of the Past Volume II as well as
Quilt Inspirations from Africa. The block can be simplified by using the Tri-Recs ruler by EZ International (Wright's).

Materials:
1/4 yard dark fabric
1/4 yard light fabric
Steps:
To make one star block:
Cutting
1. Cut four squares measuring 3-1/2 inches from background fabric
2. Cut four rectangles measuring 3" x 3-1/2" from background fabric
3. Cut nine, three-inch squares from dark fabric for star points.
Sewing
1. Layer one background rectangle and one star point fabric with right sides together (figure A).
2. On the backside of the star fabric, mark center of bottom edge. Make a mark that's 1/8 inch to each side of this mark.Now make a mark that's 1/8 inch from left and right edges on top edge (figure B).
3. Draw a line from the top edge mark on the left to bottom edge mark that is 1/8 inch to the right of center.
4. Repeat for mark on the right edge.
5. Lay this marked unit on the bias connector fabric piece (right sides together). Sew on one line, then press back and trim inside layer only.
6. Fold fabric back and trim excess fabric to edge of base square (figure C ).
7. Repeat for other side.
