Steps:
1. Sew each red square to a corner of four light-colored, 2-1/2-inch squares. Stitch on the diagonal (figure A). Press the seam.
2. Using the same technique as in step 1, sew two light-colored, 1-1/2-inch squares to two medium-colored, 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles.
3. Sew to background squares to the 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" medium-colored strip. Sew the other two background squares to the 2-1/2" x 10-1/2" medium-colored strips. Press.
4. Sew the two dark-colored squares to the last two, 1-1/2-inch light-colored squares. Sew the 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" light-colored rectangles to these units. Press and trim as desired.
5. Make six, half-square triangles from the medium- and light-colored three-inch squares (figure B). Press and trim.
6. Arrange all of the units to create the face. Be sure all of the units are trimmed to the correct size before sewing.
Wall hanging
1. Add a 1-1/2-inch border of background fabric around the perimeter of the block. Then sew a one-inch border of black material followed by a one-inch border of white material. Add black corner blocks to the white border.
2. Sew a third one-inch black border followed by a three-inch medium-colored border with corner blocks made from a dark-colored four-patch. Add a 2-1/2-inch dark-colored border so that the quilt measures 32 square inches.
Pillow
1. Sew a 1-1/2-inch border of background fabric around the perimeter of the block.
2. Make an envelope backing to insert the pillow form into (figure C). Add prairie points around the front of the pillow by folding a square in half twice along the diagonal (figure D). Press and tuck one triangle slightly inside another, creating a line the desired length. Stitch 1/8-inch from the raw edge (figure E). Press out the prairie points and add another line of stitching 1/8-inch from the seam.
