Liza Prior Lucy
Coauthor of Glorious Patchwork, Liza Prior Lucy, is in studio to show how to play intense tricks with color. Traditional blocks are exaggerated through color in a post modern perspective. Kaffe Fassett and Liza design as a team. They design 10 to 20 quilts at a time and Liza pieces them.

For beginners, Liza recommends making a design board from cocoa-colored flannel Homasote insulation board (figure A). Use two, 8' x 4' sheets of Homasote. Cover the board in a neutral colored flannel (not white). Take the board outside and spray the foil side of it with glue. Wrap the glue-covered side of the board in pressed, flat, quality flannel fabric. Hinge boards together with duct tape to accommodate the size of your quilt.

Figure B
" Dark Star" Block
This quilt is a charm quilt— that is, a one-patch quilt. It's made up of 60-degree angle diamond shapes all cut the exact same size (figure B).
1. For each block, cut six same-size, 60-degree diamonds from the same fabric. For each star block, cut three same-size, same-angle diamonds from background fabric. Place one star diamond on top of another, right sides together and stitch from the sharp point to the dull point with a 1/4" seam allowance. Don't stitch through the end. Stop at 1/4". Backstitch at the dull point. Press the seam open — if you don't open the seam, this method won't work.

2. Repeat for all star pieces, then sew them together into a block.

3. Connect the stars with background diamonds. To do this, stitch a background diamond to one point of the block by aligning the fabric, right sides together (background fabric on top), and stitching to the intersection with a 1/4" seam allowance. With the needle down, pivot the unit, lift the background fabric over to the opposite side of the star point and stitch with a 1/4" seam allowance (figure C).

4. For borders, create half-star blocks from stripes. Quilt and bind.

Liza Prior Lucy and Kaffe Fassett also collaborated on these quilts:

This quilt, named "Tidal Pool" utilizes the same design as "Dark Star," only it's supersized. The designers decided to tone down borders by using subdued colors for the half stars.

The "Patriotic Stars" quilt features a red-white-and-blue motif. Fabulous!
