Heart quilts are so much fun to make, and we doubt you'll find anyone who wouldn't love this as a gift. You'll want to dig into your fabric stash for this one since the more reds you use the better. You'll love making this quilt . . . we cross our hearts!
Fabric:
For this quilt, only red will do! But be adventurous and look for a variety of reds including plums, light pinks, dark mauves and, of course, classic red.
Cutting Instructions for the 12" Block Background fabric:
Four 2-1/2" squares
One 6-7/8" square (cut in half)
Heart fabric:
Six 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces
One 6-7/8" square (cut in half)
Assembling Instructions:
- Follow (figure A) for placement of pieces.
- The top two pieces of the heart are the only parts of this block that require more thought than the rest. Simply take one of the 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" heart pieces and face right side up. Next lay one of the 2 1/2" background squares face down on the left side of the heart piece and draw a line diagonally across.
- Sew on this line (figure B) and then trim off the excess (figure C ).
- Repeat this step for the right side of the heart piece.
- Next, sew one side of the heart together, pressing the seams toward you. Sew the other side of the heart and press the seams away from you. The opposing seams will allow the quilt to lay down better.
- The last step is to join the two heart pieces together.
The 6" block and 4" block are done in the same manner. Here are the cutting instructions for those blocks.
6" Block (figure D)
Background fabric:
Four 1-1/2" squares
One 3-7/8" square (cut in half)
Heart fabric:
Two 3-1/2" square
One 3-7/8" square (cut in half)
4" Block (figure E)
Background fabric:
Four 1" squares
One 3-1/8" square (cut in half)
Heart fabric:
Two 2-1/4" x 2-3/4" rectangles
One 3-1/8" square
