Steps:

1. Trace Sunbonnet Sue pattern onto template plastic (figure A).

2. Locate and mark the skirt's (dress) center on the template for placement onto the background block. Tip: The skirts center is determined by locating the center on the Sunbonnet Sue pattern prior to cutting apart.

3. Trace Sunbonnet Sue pattern onto fabric and allow for 1/8-inch border for turning under to applique stitching.

4. Mark the skirts center for precise placement on the background fabric and cut out the pattern pieces.

5. Cut a 12-inch square of background fabric and fold into fourths to locate the center (figure B). The finished size should be a 10-inch block as the blocks shrink when applique stitching. Trim to a 10-inch block if necessary.

6. Pin the marked skirt (dress) center onto the background fabric's center for perfect placement (figure C).

7. Position, pin and applique stitch all pieces onto the background fabric in the following manner. Stitch each applique component with matching thread. Example: when appliquéing a lavender dress use lavender thread.
- Attach foot first (figure D).
- Next, attach the hand under the arm by rolling the hand under the arm and stitch together.
- Applique the dress, apron, arm and lastly the bonnet.
