cone-shaped templates - cut your own or purchase a set (figure A)

4-1/2" squares of fabric - light and dark colors
3-1/2" strips of fabric - light and dark colors
small rotary cutter

Steps:

  1. Place the smallest template in the corner of a stack of 4-1/2-inch fabric squares , lining up the corner of the template to the corner of the squares, then cut along the curved edge of the fabric (figure B). Stacks of four squares are easy to manage . Cut equal numbers of light and dark colored pieces. You can use two light and two dark to complete a block.
  2. Fold the 3-1/2-inch strip of fabric in half in order to cut two pieces with one cut. Using a template that's 1/2 inch longer on the curve than the first template (figure C), align the corner of the template with the loose ends corner of the folded fabric strip and cut along the curve (figure D).
  3. Realign the edge of the template on the fabric strip and cut a second set of this shape. This time it will be necessary to cut along two sides of the template (figure E). Cut equal numbers of light and dark colored pieces. Use two light and two dark pieces to complete a full block. Note: The template set shown here has a third template with 1/4-inch seam allowance for hand piecing.
  4. Fold each fabric piece in half diagonally from the point and finger-crease the middle of the curve to mark the center of each piece.
  5. Position one dark and one light fabric piece right sides together, aligning the center marks in the curves of each piece and pinning at the center to secure. Once the center has been pinned, align the pieces cut edge to cut edge, and pin to secure . Repeat on the opposite cut edge. Place two more pins in between each edge and the middle so the two fabric pieces are securely pinned together (figure F). Make four of these for each block. Try two of each color combo.
  6. Machine stitch with a 1/4-inch seam allowance along the curve to sew the pieces together. Sew with the larger piece of fabric up, taking care not to sew the folds .
  7. Once pieces are sewn, press the seam to the larger piece of fabric.
  8. Place four of the sewn pieces together as desired (figure G). Varying the arrangement will render different patterns for this quilt (figure H).
