Materials:
one 10-1/2-inch square of off-white fabric or muslin
four, three-inch green squares
seven-inch square of printed fabric for butterfly (fabric resembling the 1930's era works well)
a butterfly template - made from either cardboard, x-ray material, etc.
Steps:
Cutting and construction
1. Place a green three-inch square on one corner of the 10-1/2-inch muslin block.
2. Draw a diagonal line across the square as shown and sew on that line (figure A). Next, cut off the top part of the green fabric that is not facing the inside of the block (figure B).
3. Flip the other green fabric over and finger-press. Repeat this process for each corner of the block.
4. Place the butterfly template on printed fabric and trace around with a pencil (figure C). Add a 3/16-inch seam allowance all the way around butterfly. Cut out.
5. Press seams under and place the butterfly in the center of the 10-1/2-inch muslin block (figure D). Baste into place.
6. To give the butterfly a little character, stitch a buttonhole or running stitch along the edges of the butterfly (figure E). Add antennas and other shapes to the inside of the butterfly with a running stitch (figure F).
7. To make the quilt shown here, you will need 42 blocks total (figure G). This quilt used 21 blocks with white as the main block and green as an accent. The other 21 blocks used green as the main block and white as an accent.
8. Butterflies can be placed in a scattered fashion or more orderly such as the quilt shown here.
Note: The finished quilt shown during this episode featured butterflies with stitches along the outer border of the butterfly instead of on the inside edge.
