Sampler quilt
The "Quilting in the Garden" outdoor exhibition in Livermore, Calif., began in 1998 with more than 1,000 visitors. The next year saw a twofold increase in visitors. Exhibition visitors are composed of avid quilters and non-quilters alike including gardeners, artists and others attracted to the art of quilting. This garden nursery has been transformed into a quilt garden amidst the flowers and enormous 250- to 300-year-old oak trees, making this a breathtaking setting to display quilts.

The 2002 show features the quilting team of artists Diana McClun and Laura Nownes. They collaborated in quilting each quilt combining traditional patterns with contemporary fabrics. This exhibition affords the artists a rare opportunity to display more than 70 of their quilts.

McClun and Nownes meet each Monday to plan future projects and to quilt. They have worked together for the past 22 years and have forged an ongoing partnership and friendship. See a selection of their quilts at the right.
