Materials:

book - Batik Beauties
two pair of batik fabrics
- gold fabric and brown fabric for one pair (unit)
- black fabric and black-and-gold print fabric for the second pair (unit)
microtech sharp needles
thread
pencil
ruler
batting
rotary cutter and mat

The finished quilt includes 48 nine-inch shadow blocks and is measures approximately 66" x 84".

Steps:

Cutting


  1. Cut a two-inch strip, a 3-1/2-inch strip and a 5-3/8-inch strip from gold batik fabric.

  2. Cut a two-inch strip from brown batik fabric.

  3. Cut a two-inch strip from black batik fabric.

  4. Cut a 5-3/8-inch strip, a two-inch strip and a 3-1/2-inch strip from the black-and-gold print batik fabric.

Piecing four-patch units and rectangles

  1. Sew a two-inch strip of the gold batik to a two-inch strip of the brown batik keeping right sides together (figure A). Press the seam toward the brown batik. Sew the strips of gold and brown batiks together in pairs (figure B). Line up pairs in reverse to form a four-patch unit.

  2. Crosscut the units created in step 1 into two-inch segments. Repeat this process using the black and black-and-gold print batiks.

  • Sew a 3-1/2-inch strip of gold batik to a two-inch strip of the brown batik (creates a square and rectangle unit). Press the seam toward the gold batik. Crosscut into two-inch segments (figure C). Repeat with the black and black-and-gold print batiks.

  • Cut the remaining 3-1/2-inch strips of gold batik into two-inch wide segments (figure D). Repeat with the remaining 3-1/2-inch strip of black-and-gold print batik.

  • Sew a gold rectangle (figure E) to the gold and brown four-patch unit. Sew a black-and-gold print rectangle to the black and black-and-gold print four-patch unit. Press the seams toward the rectangles.

  • Stitch the unit created in step 3 (figure F) to the unit of the same fabrics created in step 5, being careful to position the small squares all in a diagonal row. Repeat with the other two fabrics.

    Half-square triangle units

    1. Draw perpendicular lines on the wrong side of the 5-3/8-inch strip of gold batik fabric using a sharp pencil and ruler spacing 5-3/8 inches apart (figure G). Draw diagonal lines between the perpendicular lines to form a zigzag pattern.

  • Layer the gold fabric with the black print fabric with right sides together and pin. Stitch 1/4-inch on both sides of the diagonal line (figure H), run the stitching off the fabric when necessary and pivot as needed. Press.

  • Cut the block segments at the perpendicular lines, then cut in half diagonally to create two triangles. Press open for two half-square triangle units (figure I). Trim the "dog ears" to square the unit.

  • Stitch the triangle units to the square units. Sew these units together in pairs for a completed Shadow block.

    Assemble

  • Arrange the blocks in a 90-degree position (figure J) and assemble the quilt top.

  • Attach the first border out of black batik, sides first.

  • Sew 1-1/4-inch strips of gold batik together in pairs to form the mock piping middle border (figure K). Press. Fold in half the long way, wrong sides together. Press.

  • Stitch sides to the quilt top. Press flat but don't press the seam allowance to one side. Trim the ends even with the quilt top.

  • Sew the remaining two strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Press flat without pressing the seam allowance to one side. Trim the ends even with the quilt top.

  • Attach the outer borders (figure L).
