Materials:

Waratah flower pattern (from Thimblelady)
needles
thimble
background fabric
four shades of red fabric
green fabric
thread
transparent templates
batting
quilting frame

Steps:


  1. Fold background fabric (figure A) according to the flower pattern guidelines and dry iron. Steam pressing is not recommended as the fold lines remain on the background fabric.

  2. Make flower templates and number according to flower position.

  • Cut out flowers and stitch flower pieces together (figure B).

  • Sew the edge of the flower onto the background fabric and needle turn or applique stitch.

  • Cut a small opening on the background fabric on the bias (underneath the flower). Insert a small amount of batting to create the Trapunto effect.

  • Trapunto and applique the motifs as desired and finish the quilt with hand quilting.
