From a book titled
Paper Perfect by Lark Books came today's project for making these very easy, yet very nice little frames. They can be left plain or decorated in most any way you can decorate paper . . . rubber stamp, paint, decorate with metallic pens, wire, stones, etc. The same principles apply in making these frames whether you make them large or small, horizontal or vertical. The frame that Carol Duvall demonstrated was a horizontal 5" x 7" frame.
Materials:
12" x 18" piece of art paper or card stock
ruler
folding bone
red liner double stick tape or glue
pencil
craft knife
Steps:
- Cut a piece of the paper 7" wide and 14-1/2" long. Score across the page at 5", 5", 2", 2" and 1/2" intervals. The top 5" will be the back of the frame stand, the second 5" will be the front, the two 2" spaces will form the brace and the remaining 1/2" will be the strip that is covered with tape or glue and attached to the back of the stand.
- Cut a 5" x 7" piece of paper that will actually frame the photo. Draw and cut out the center, leaving a border slightly wider than 1" all the way around. This will frame a 4" x 6" photo.
- Cut another 5" x 7" piece of paper and place a 4" x 6" photo in the center. Draw around the picture on three sides. Remove photo and cut out the center section of the paper leaving a three-sided border. This will be glued to the front of the folded frame stand. The actual frame with the cutout center will be glued on top of this. Because its purpose is to allow room for the picture to slide in and out, you might wish to make this three-sided border of heavier cardboard or cut several layers of the paper to give it a bit of added depth.
- Glue the three-sided border to the front of the frame stand. Glue the frame over it. Fold the long piece of scored paper to form the standing frame and glue or tape the 1/2" wide strip to the back of the frame. Done!
Note: If you'll decorate the front piece of the frame, do so before attaching it to the standing piece. If you prefer, you can rubber stamp or draw onto a piece of adhesive-backed paper cut to fit the frame, then attach it to the frame rather than decorating directly onto the frame.
