This project started in two places at once and has no doubt been tried in many crafters' homes across the country. It's one of those ideas that creative people think of. In this case, it was both at my birthday dinner in Michigan, and in producer Linda Watson's California apartment that the idea germinated. I received a birthday gift from my daughter-in-law, Rita, in a beige-colored paper bag that had gold swirls all over it and "Happy Birthday" printed on it in block letters. In truth, it was a bag from The Pottery Barn, a housewares store. Rita had added the swirls with a gold pen, blocked out some Pottery Barn logo letters by drawing a black and gold square over them, and added others to spell out "Happy Birthday."
Meanwhile, Linda had been gathering up bags from some stores around town . . . her favorite place being the cosmetic counter at Robinson's store. She too was disguising or covering up the logos of the various cosmetic companies with all manner of add-ons. Using adhesive-backed glitter paper and holographic paper, Contact paper, gift wrap paper, ribbon, plus gold pens and black pens, Linda covered up, added to, and in general made very attractive gift bags out of what had been advertising for the various companies. Because these bags are often made out of heavyweight, glossy-finish paper they dress up beautifully and can be reused any number of times. Giving a gift in them is like giving an extra gift.
