Guest artist Robert Lee talks about his special paper sculptures of Cher, Oprah, a rabbit and fish, and then demonstrates his techniques, which are modeled after those he found in a book called Paper Sculptures. For display purposes, Robert recommends using a box from a Lucite frame, since it can be re-cut to produce an inside shadow box to showcase the sculpture.
Steps:
- Sketch a design indicating where the raised paper pieces will be.
- Draw this image onto colored paper, cut part of it out, and score the areas that will be folded.
- Shape some of the pieces and attach them to foam core to provide dimension, and glue other pieces directly to the backing.
Variation:
- Begin with a snapshot (which can be enlarged at a copy center if it is too small), and make a sketch of the photo by tracing over the person's features.
- Make several photocopies of the sketch so that there are enough for the various layers.
- Create templates of each facial characteristic - nose, mouth, eyes, ears, hair, etc. - from the copies.
- Cut the characteristics from colored paper and paste identical pieces on top of each other to provide dimension.
