Wycinanki was first used in the rural communities of Eastern Europe and Poland, in particular. The charming designs created from this paper-cutout technique are applied to just about any surface for a unique accessory.

Materials:

colored paper
glue or spray adhesive
mounting board
scissors

Steps:

  1. Fold paper in half. Wycinanki is traditionally cut freehand but use a pattern if desired.
  2. Working from the non-folded paper edge, cut through both layers of paper around the pattern outlines to create a broad outline of the design.
  3. Cut the fine details and add any finishing touches in the shape design. Unfold the paper and spread for mounting (figure A).
  4. The type of glue used will determine the dimension of the finished project. To add a third dimension, dot the back of the outline with white glue and position on the mounting board or paper. If a flat look is preferred, use spray adhesive.
  5. For multiple-color designs, cut the main parts of the design and glue to the mounting. Then, cut details from other colored paper and glue on the main design (figure B).
