"Shirt Tie Wrap" for a Bottle of Wine

Materials
30" gift wrap paper, plain or pinstripe
#5 (3/4") ribbon, approximately 3/4 yard
stapler
tape
scissors

Steps
  1. Wrap the paper around the bottle by rolling the bottle, leaving 1" of paper extended beyond the bottom. Tape. Fold paper onto the bottom. Tape.
  2. Flatten and crease the paper extending beyond the neck of the bottle. Fold down towards the backside, 8 or 9 inches.
  3. Narrow and fold the end piece. Tape down.
  4. Fold over the top edge 1-1/2" towards the front. Staple in the center.
  5. Cut along the edge of fold, leaving one inch uncut under the staple at center. Fold the paper down toward the back 1/2" to form shoulder line. Tape on backside.
  6. Glide ribbon through collar. Fold collar towards the center front to shape the collar.
  7. To knot the tie: The left ribbon should be twice as long as right-sided ribbon. Loop, left over right, twice. Bring the ribbon up through collar, pass through second loop, and gently tighten. Trim the ends of the ribbon if needed. A dab of glue will fasten the tie flat onto shirt front.

Tips
  • Use newspaper as gift wrap: the sports section for the sports buff; the stock page for the investor; the comics page for the clown. This is also a great way to recycle.
  • The same technique may also be used on tall, rectangular boxes.

The Party Popper
This is the ideal wrap for the gift with no box, such as a bag of loose potpourri.

Materials
tissue paper
printed cellophane
ribbon, 1 yard or more
curling ribbon, 3/8", 24" long
tape
scissors
optional: floral enhancements

Steps
  1. Wrap tissue paper around potpourri bag, vase, or other container. Tuck the paper, fold it under, and secure it with tape. If your item is an irregular shape or breakable, wrap enough tissue paper around the item to "smooth" out the shape and/or cushion and protect it.
  2. Roll 1 to 2 sheets of tissue paper around the item, extending the paper beyond the edges. Tape to secure.
  3. Place item on a large square of printed cellophane. Bring the cellophane up around the sides of the item.
  4. Gather in the ends of the tissue and cellophane, fasten, and tie with 12" length of curling ribbon. Double knot and trim off the excess ribbon.
  5. Tie decorative ribbon into bows or simple knots. Add enhancements of florals if desired.

Wrapping Irregular Shapes
  • Wrap a football using the sports page of the local newspaper. Ribbons may include alma mater colors.
  • Wrap a bundle of cigars using brown craft paper or paper bags cut apart. Use raffia for the bow.
  • Layer three colors of tissue paper to create a festive look. Add multicolored curling ribbons.
  • Create a large, wrapped "candy" by wrapping red and white striped paper around a round cookie tin.
