Designed by Emi Fukushima.

Materials:

Japanese washi paper
11" x 14" shadow box with mat board frame
dragonfly charms
seven-inch length of bamboo
tassel
paper cord
pebbles
gold thread
white glue
scissors

Steps:

1. Cut a 4" x 5" piece of washi paper for the background to fit inside the mat frame. For outside the mat frame, cut one 2" x 10" and a second 2" x 4". Apply with glue.

2. To make the kimono: Cut washi paper to 2" x 6". Fold 1/4 inch twice at one end to fashion the collar (figure A).

3. Fold the center of the collar toward you to form the lapel and collar (figure B).

4. Fold over that end to center about 1-1/2 inches (figure C).

5. Fold the lapel to one third of the entire length of paper, leaving 1/2 inch from the top of the collar to fold (figure D).

6. Fold the flap behind the collar for the sleeves. Fold both sides to the edge of collar (figure E).

7. Open that fold, leaving a V-shaped opening at the top (figure F).

8. Fold back the V-shape fold (figure G).

9. To make the fan: Cut paper 1-3/4" x 6" and fold accordion-style. Pinch one end and tie securely with 28-gauge wire.

10. Open the fan and add a tassel to the end.

11. To make the lanterns: Cut paper 1-1/2" x 2-1/2", 1-1/4" x 2-1/2" and 1" x 2 -1/2" (three different sized lanterns). Cut six pieces of plain black paper measuring 1/8" x 3". Glue the black paper to the edges of the three pieces of the washi paper.

12. Cut slits in the center of the paper at 1/4-inch intervals and to 1/4 inch from the edge (figure H). Glue the ends together.

13. Push down the center to form the lantern (figure I).

14. To make the pebbles: Cut paper to cover a small portion of the rock and glue. Tie a paper cord around the paper and rock (figure J).

15. To assemble the collage: Place kimonos on the outside of the frame mat board.

16. Hang the lanterns on the bamboo using gold thread; then glue bamboo inside the mat board.

17. Add the fan with tassel at the edge of background paper. Glue on the pebbles and the dragonfly charm.
