Guest Suzanne McNeill demonstrates how to make these unique folded cards.

Materials:

red quilt pattern paper
white quilt pattern paper
red heart pattern vellum paper
white card stock
spray mount adhesive
glue
craft knife or scissors
2 Velcro dots
small heart paper punch

Steps:

Outside card

1. Using spray mount adhesive, attach red quilt pattern paper to one side of white card stock, and red heart pattern vellum paper on the other side.

2. Trace and cut out two vest patterns and two front pockets (see pattern at right) from the covered card stock created in step 1.

3. With the red quilt pattern facing out, score and fold the vest cutouts as indicated by the dotted lines.

4. Overlap one folded vest cutout over the main portion of other (figure A). Run a bead of glue between the sides and bottom edges of the overlapping portion of the cutouts to form a pocket in the back of the vest.

5. Close the vest by folding in the side flaps. Use Velcro dots to keep it closed.

6. Score and fold the two front pockets from the covered card stock created in step 1 so the heart vellum side is facing out.

7. Fold two 1-1/2-inch squares of the white quilt pattern paper (pattern side out) into "explosion cards." To do this, score the paper according to the pattern diagram (figure B).

8. Pinch the square along the scored lines into a triangular shape (figure C). To complete, fold the side points of the triangle toward the inside along the score lines forming a five-sided pyramid explosion card (figure D).

9. Unfold the front pockets and glue a folded explosion card inside each one. Close the pocket flap (figures E and F).

10. Glue a quarter of the Velcro dot under each flap.

11. Glue the pockets to the outside of the vest, and glue punched hearts on the pocket flaps (figure G).

Inside card

1. Score and accordion-fold a 2-1/2" x 10" piece of white quilt pattern paper at two inches intervals.

2. Trace, cut, score and fold the large envelope out of red quilt pattern paper (see the patterns at right).

3. Glue one end of the accordion folded paper to the inside of the large envelope (figure H).

4. Close the envelope and glue the back of it to the inside center of the vest (figure I).

5. Trace and cut two of the smaller envelopes from the red quilt paper (figure J).

6. Fold and glue; then glue an envelope inside the vest on either side of the large envelope (figure K).

7. Write secret messages on paper strips and insert them in the pockets.
