Book Necklace

1. Fold a 18" x 3-3/4" strip of paper in half lengthwise (figure A). Unfold the paper and then fold the two sections just created in half. Make all three creases into mountain folds (crease up) (figure B). Fold those sections in half again until you have eight even sections. Make all seven creases into mountains. Fold all eight sections in half to create 16 even sections of an accordion booklet.

3. Turn the unit so that pages face out like a book. Open one page at a time and fold the top and bottom corners down (figure E). Open the next page and fold the top and bottom corners down. Fold the corners on all the pages (figure F) until the book is finished. It will hold itself together without the use of glue or stitching.

4. To begin making the cover, cut a 9" x 3-3/4" piece of paper and draw a line horizontally down the center of the paper (figure G).

5. Measure the front and back covers and the spine of the closed book pages and create templates for the covers and the spine (figure H).

6. With the book cover template, measure in one book width from one end of the 9" x 3-3/4" piece of paper and make a score line with the top end of a pen or with a dull plastic knife. Measure in another book length and make a another score line. At the end of the second score line, create a 1/2-inch valley fold facing the center of the paper.

7. Fold the piece of paper twice horizontally so that the edges meet the center line drawn in step 4.

8. Continue scoring the piece of paper according to the diagram in figure I .

9. Fold the book in on all of the score lines. On the fourth book score, fold the corners in at a 45 degree angle as in step 2.

10. Place the end pages of the book through the openings on either side of the book cover (figure J). The folds of the book cover should fit the angles of the book.

12. String a cord through the spine of the book to create a necklace.
