Figure C
Crafter Harriet David demonstrates how easy it is to make charming items from brown paper bags. She displays items in the shape of dolls, stars and hearts, and then shows Carol the basic steps for making a teddy bear.

Materials:

large brown paper bags
tracing paper
pencil
scissors
tacky glue*
craft paints or antiquing medium
polyester filling
stick
clothespins

*Regular white school glue is too thin for this project.

Steps:

  1. Draw a pattern of a teddy bear on the tracing paper (figure A). For simplicity, start with a basic rectangle and add arms, legs, ears and a curved top.
  2. Cut out the pattern, and trace it onto the brown paper bag. Cut out the figure .
  3. Apply a thick line of glue around the edge of the figure (figure B), but leave a space at the top of the bear without glue. This is where the figure will be stuffed.
  4. Cut out a piece of brown paper that is larger than the figure.
  5. Place the figure glue-side-down on the paper, and rub the edges of the figure to ensure a good bond between the two pieces of paper.
  6. While the glue is drying, paint the paper as desired. In this project, the bear was rubbed with a light application of an antiquing medium to make it appear aged.
  7. After the glue has dried, cut the bear from the piece of paper it was glued to in step 5.
  8. Stuff the bear with small wads of polyester filling, and push the filling into the extremities with a stick or the handle of a long paintbrush (figure C).
  9. After the bear is stuffed, glue the top together, and clamp the paper together with clothespins until the glue is dry.
  10. Embellish the figure with raffia, buttons, ribbons, etc., as desired.
