Project designed by Arnold Grummer.
Materials:
several handmade sheets of paper
two large tin cans (empty coffee cans work well) - use a can opener to remove the bottom from one can
colorful wastepaper
two 6"x6" window screens
6"x6" hardware cloth
6"x6" plastic canvas
paper towel
blender
turkey baster
sponge
small wood block
three plastic cups
iron with ironing pad
Steps:
- Follow steps 1 to 2 above to prepare three cups of different colored paper pulp using colorful recyclable paper.
- Layer papermaking equipment: bottom can, hardware cloth, window screen, tulle fabric, and top can. Use a clear cylinder instead of a top can if available.
- Pour one color of paper pulp into the top can and onto the screen to create the main sheet of paper. Allow water to drain from paper for a minute.
- Use turkey baster to pick up small amounts of a second color of paper pulp. To form a border, dribble the pulp around the edge of the draining sheet created in step 4. Add third color of pulp in the same manner.
- Press and dry as described in steps 5 - 7 in Tin Can Papermaking project.
Tips:
- Keep an eye out for unusual colors for paper recycling.
- Use different shaped containers, such as paper milk cartons with the ends torn off, to create other shapes.
- Make border paper pulp easier to control by thinning it with a touch of extra water.
- Make paper pulp images using different colors of paper pulp and a turkey baster as a "pen" for drawing.
Note - This is a fun recycling art project for families, scout groups and crafters. Remember, adult supervision is required for children using blender and iron.
