Christine Angeli puts down the sealing wax to create homemade paper that's enjoyed renewed popularity in the crafting world. Using the Folding Heart Double Deckle she designed, Christine made a lovely heart-shaped, folded card perfect for any occasion.
Materials:
junk mail or Christmas cards
napkins
blender
Folding Heart Double Deckle
screen
wooden paper frame
pan
iron
couch - (pronounced "koosh") a heavy watercolor-type paper to help absorb water
Steps:
- Tear paper item into pieces. Mix in a small amount of tissue paper to make the final paper a little stiffer and to give it a better writing surface.
- Place the paper pieces in the blender, add plenty of water, and blend only five to ten seconds. Over-blending will causes the colors to dull.
- Place the heart mold in a wooden paper frame and pour onto it the contents of the blender. Make sure that the pulp spreads evenly in the mold.
- Place a screen over the mold and, using a sponge, blot the screen to soak up all the excess water. Any remaining pulp and water left in the blender should be first strained through a sieve before draining down the sink, since the pulp will inevitably clog the drain.
- Remove the screen from the paper frame, and place reusable couch sheets on top and bottom of the heart mold to absorb the remaining water. Remove the heart mold. An iron can be used at this time to dry the paper in a few minutes, or allow to dry overnight.
- Decorate as desired.
Christine's Ideas
- To make a basket from the card, fold the double heart paper, seal the edges with craft glue and put dried flowers inside. Use a ribbon for the basket handles.
- Cookie cutters, such as those that are heart-shaped, can be substituted for the paper mold, but keep in mind that this will create a single heart rather than the double one as described above.
