Figure D
Host Renai Ellison turns an historic Amish quilt design into a paper-collaged wall hanging.

Materials:

large No. 10 canvas
art paper
matte medium or white craft glue
paintbrushes
chalk
water-based polyurethane
antiquing gel
roller
latex house paint to prime canvas
hooks that grip
hot-glue gun

Steps:

  1. Prime the canvas by painting it with two coats of flat latex paint, letting each coat dry well. You might want to apply hot glue to the edge of canvas to give it straight, sharp edges.

  2. Use a ruler and chalk to draw the design on the canvas (figure A).

  3. Cut design elements out of art paper. Place and glue paper elements onto the canvas (figure B).

  4. When glue is dry, pour water-based polyurethane onto the canvas (figure C). Use a roller to spread the polyurethane all over the canvas to seal it.

  5. Once polyurethane is dry, use a cloth to apply antiquing gel to wall hanging to give it an aged look (figure D).

  6. Attach hooks and hang as you would a curtain, on a rod or dowel.
