Guest Mary Jo McGraw creates a faux tile card.
Materials:
scissors
Perfect FX mica tiles
square card stock pieces
clear glue
color copies of old photos
circle cutter or punches
metal stamps
hammer
brads or eyelets
double-stick tape
gold leafing pen
thin copper sheet
Rub & Buff (black)
small hole punch or awl
Steps:
1. Using a circle cutter, punch or a craft knife, cut a two-inch circle (or any shape you like) out of the center of both layers of a folded square card. Set aside (figure A).
2. With another square card, remove all but a one-inch border from the front panel, resulting in the back panel of the card being whole and a one-inch border for the front. The card that the circle has been cut from becomes your front panel (figure B).
3. Carefully separate the mica tile into two thin pieces of equal size (larger than the cut circle).
4. Cut or punch two smaller circles (about 1-1/2 inches) out of identical color copies of an heirloom photo. Color copy old black-and-white photos on the full color setting to achieve the rich tones that heirloom photos have. Attach the photos back-to-back with a small piece of double-stick tape. Insert the photos between the mica tiles (figure C).
5. Apply a drop of Diamond Glaze to an inconspicuous spot on the photo to keep the photo in place (figure D).
6. Seal the card. Attach the entire element to the inside of the one-inch border card using double-sided tape (figure E).
7. With scissors, cut out a small strip of copper and round off the corners. Holding each metal stamp straight up on the copper strip, tap the top of the stamp several times with a small hammer. After completing the stamping, rub a bit of Rub & Buff over the stamped letters and wipe off any excess.
8. Punch a hole on either end of the strip with a 1/8-inch hole punch (figure F). Lay the strip on the front of the card for placement, and mark the holes with a pencil. Then punch corresponding holes in the cardstock (figure G).
10. Attach the strip with tiny brads.
